Good Intentions Aren’t Enough

Here’s the deal: your intention doesn’t determine your impact.

As church communicators, we should always be thinking about the people who aren’t in the room yet—the folks who have no idea our church even exists or why it might be the place for them.

Good Intentions ≠ Clear Communication

We all have good intentions when creating church content.
But that’s not enough.

Extra effort is required to ensure everything we create is:

  • Engaging

  • Clear

  • Newcomer-friendly

If your communication materials aren’t created with first-time guests in mind... you’re probably missing the mark.

Why This Matters (Especially Now)

With Easter right around the corner, this couldn’t be more important.
But let’s be honest—every Sunday is a mini Easter, right?

If we’re not careful, we can unintentionally prioritize insiders—because their voices are the loudest. That’s why getting an outsider’s perspective is so important. It’s not either-or; it’s both-and.

Your communications should speak to:

  • The people already connected to your church and

  • The people who haven’t walked through your doors—yet

The Role of Design in All This

This is where graphic design makes a big impact.

Your visuals, branding, and messaging need to reach those on the outside looking in.
A strong visual presence isn’t just about looking good—it’s about being:

  • Clear

  • Compelling

  • Welcoming

Practical Tip

Ask yourself:
👉 “Is my intention clear to someone who’s never been here before?”

If the answer is no, simplify your message. Align your:

  • Visuals

  • Words

  • Delivery

…to meet people where they are.
